Je partage avec vous une série d’articles et news que j’ai trouvés cette semaine et qui font écho à l’article du Time Magazine, dont j’avais posté quelques extraits ici.
Ces articles confirment la place prépondérente que prend le marché indien dans le domaine de la mode et du luxe.
Le premier article, issu du FashionMag, fait état de l’ouverture de la première boutique Gucci en Inde (Mumbai, ex-Bombay), Mark Lee, PDG de Gucci s’y exprime en ces termes :
« … nous sommes absolument certains que notre héritage, fort de quatre-vingt-six années, incarné dans nos produits de grande qualité, made in Italy, encensant le luxe et l’innovation, sera apprécié par les clients indiens. »
Le second est un extrait issu du compte-rendu des défilés parisiens S/S 2008 écrit par Suzy Menkès dans l’IHT, elle fait référence au défilé Hermès entièrement dédié à l’Inde, je cite :
« Backstage at Hermès, it looked like Old Delhi during the Hindu festival of Holi. The models were shaking the leather turbans and silken hair twists and Jean-Paul Gaultier was wiping from his face the russet powder that had been falling in colorful puffs off the backdrop.
It was a Hermès-goes-to-India moment – literally, in that the house is planning to open a store in Mumbai and as a theme for the spring/summer 2008 show.
« The sari is the most elegant garment for women in the world, » said Gaultier, after his finale of saris in jewel shades of purple, orange and blue. But he added that he was fascinated by the Raj colonial world of polo and safari. All these ideas – and themed shows now seem a cliché – were given a coat of super luxury.
And often it worked beautifully for Hermès, as in the white crocodile jodhpurs, or just the same pants in a stone beige with a ultra-fine cashmere knitted vest over a full-sleeved white blouse.
The Hermès silk prints treated as free-floating tops and sari drapery, on the lines of the toga, looked very fine. Accessories like carved bangles, scarves and bags in colors of curry and spice carried only a light dusting of India. »
Hermès met donc le paquet pour aborder le marché indien, en dédiant un défilé à son nouvel objectif. Mais lorsque Jean-Paul Gaultier, parle de sa fascination pour l’Inde et ses traditions, du sari et des accessoires aux couleurs et matières adaptées aux coutumes locales, Mark Lee parle des produits « Made in Italy » appréciés par les clients indiens, une attitude que je trouve opposée. D’un côté on fait référence à la culture indienne, où le luxe n’est pas comme en Chine, une nouveauté, les maharajas élevés avec la joaillerie Cartier et les bagages Louis Vuitton en sont un bel exemple ; de l’autre on parle de produits qui s’imposeront d’eux-mêmes par leurs qualités intrinsèques. Or l’Inde, qui possède depuis longtemps ses propres marques de luxe, est plus un marché à apprendre qu’un marché à conquérir. Ces différences d’approches sont-elles juste le fait que l’un est designer et l’autre PDG ?
Le troisième est un lien chez BoF annoncant la sortie du premier numéro de Vogue India, avec qui les marques devront compter, en effet son éditrice, Priya Tanna prévoit de mixer mode locale et internationale. Pour finir, une citation de celle-ci concernant sa vision de l’Inde aujourd’hui :
» … There’s no cultural revolution that’s been thrust upon us. It’s not as if we’re seeing our first red lipstick and going out and buying it in hundreds of thousands. India is getting richer. At a very micro level, I think every Indian woman who is now financially independant is realizing the joys of guilt-free consumption. We are kind of moving from a ‘we’ culture to a ‘me’ culture. »
